BOCA RATON, Fla. – Longwood University softball (15-7) defeated Western Kentucky on Sunday afternoon to win the 2008 Florida Atlantic/Miken Classic held on the FAU campus in Boca Raton, Fla. Freshman Cami Ketsdever/Irvine, Calif. (Irvine) was named tournament MVP after being an offensive powerhouse for the Lancers throughout the tournament. Longwood returns home on March 18 to take on Marist in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. at the Lancer Fields.
Ketsdever got the scoring started for the Lancers in the bottom of the second inning, after leading off the inning with a double to center field. Tricia Nelson/Plainfield, Ill. (Plainfield Central) would knock Ketsdever in with a single through the left side to earn her first RBI of the day. Nelson and fellow freshman Nichole Simmons/Chesapeake (Hickory) would come in to score after Catelyn Slagle/Chesapeake (Greenbrier Christian Academy) singled to right field, allowing the duo to make their way home giving Longwood a 3-0 lead.
Western Kentucky would earn one run back in the top of the next inning, but would not be able to catch up to the Lancers. Longwood would take a 4-1 advantage in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring one run on one hit. Ketsdever would muster Longwood’s lone hit in the inning, singling up the middle. Freshman Michelle Phillips/Powhatan (Powhatan) would score the Lancers run, after a throwing error by the catcher would give her an opportunity to cross the plate.
Senior Rachel Mills/Quinton (New Kent County) pitched the complete game for the Lancers picking up her sixth win of the season (6-4). Mills faced 29 batters, striking out four and walking one.
