Longwood Defeats Florida Atlantic 6-2

The Lancers defeat FAU/Miken Classic host FAU 6-2

BOCA RATON, Fla.Longwood University softball defeated host Florida Atlantic 6-2 on Saturday afternoon as part of the Florida Atlantic/Miken Classic hosted in Boca Raton, Fla. The Lancers improve to 13-7 on the season and return to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday to take on the classics #4 seed. Longwood was led by senior Ryan Washington/Bealeton (Liberty) who hit 4-2 on the day, scoring one run.

Florida Atlantic struck first blood, scoring in the top of the third inning after a string of plays allowed the second batter of the inning to come around to score. Longwood answered back in the bottom of the inning, when Washington singled through the right side, allowing Nichole Simmons/Cheasapeak (Hickory) and Maggie Margadonna/Sea Girt, N.J. (Wall Township) to score.

The Owls tied the game 2-2 in the top of the fourth inning after a single to right center gave a FAU base runner the opportunity to score.  

Longwood would pull away with the game in the bottom the fifth inning scoring three runs on three hits. The inning began with Simmons tripling to right center field. Simmons would come around to score with the next Lancer batter, as senior Caitlin Hooe/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) reached on a fielder’s choice.

Cami Ketsdever/Irvine, Calif. (Irvine) would go on to score Hooe moments later, after getting a hold of the ball and driving it into center field. Washington would cross home plate moments later, stealing home plate, after taking advantage of a Florida Atlantic miscue.

The Lancers would make the score 6-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning with freshman Michelle Phillips/Powhatan (Powhatan) scoring the final run. Phillips would go on to score after leading off the inning with a single up the middle and advancing to second on a Emily Radford/Tacoma, Wash. (Fife) sacrifice bunt.

Freshman Briana Wells/Romoland, Calif. (Paloma Valley) pitched the complete game for the Lancers, striking out three.
