FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University swept a baseball doubleheader from visiting Coppin State University Friday at Lancer Stadium in Farmville, winning the first game 9-4 and taking the second game 4-1. The Lancers improved to 9-5 with the two-game sweep against the Eagles (2-13), and have won three-straight and seven of their last nine games. Longwood and Coppin State will play the three-game weekend series finale on Saturday, March 15, at Lancer Stadium beginning at 12 p.m..
In the opener, Longwood led 3-0 through three innings with runs in each of the first, second, and third innings before Coppin State scored two runs in the fourth to close to 3-2. The Lancers added another run in the fifth inning, and scored five more runs in the eighth to lead 9-2 before the Eagles added two runs in the ninth inning. In the first, junior Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (5-5, 2 RBI), who was 5-5 at the plate, singled with one out and scored on a two-out RBI single from sophomore Scott Kimble/Spotsylvania (Spotsylvania) (3-5, 2 RBI). In the second, Bailey’s two-out single scored sophomore David Smiy Jr./Chesterfield (Matoaca) (1-1) who had walked. In the third, freshman Justin Morreim/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) (3-5, RBI) doubled to lead-off and later scored on a two-out RBI single by senior Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (1-5, RBI). In the fifth, Morreim again doubled to lead-off and scored with one-out on an RBI single from sophomore Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (1-3, RBI).
In the five-run eighth inning, freshman Marcus Powell/Manassas (Osbourn) (0-0) was hit by a pitch to lead-off, and moved to third on a pinch-hit infield single by sophomore Casey Havers/Thorofare, N.J. (West Deptford) (1-1). Powell and Havers cross the plate on a double from junior Paul Heidler II/Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) (1-4, 2 RBI). Heidler scored on an RBI single by Bailey, and Bailey was plated by an RBI triple from Morreim who would score on an RBI single by Kimble. Junior John Walker II/Alexandria (West Potomac) (2-1) earned the pitching win with a complete-game effort, allowing seven hits and one earned run with five strikeouts over the 9.0 innings.
In the nightcap, Longwood led 1-0 through five innings with an early run in the second. Coppin State tied it at 1-1 with a run in the sixth inning before the Lancers scored three runs in the sixth to secure the home win. In the second, Cerreto (2-2, 2 RBI) reached on a bunt-single to the mound and later moved around to third on a throwing error before scoring on a steal of second base by Havers (0-2, RBI). In the sixth, Morreim (1-3) led-off with a single and advanced to third when Kimble (2-3) bunted safely ahead of a wild throw. Cerreto followed with a two-run double and he later scored on a one-out sacrifice fly from Havers. Bailey (2-3) added two more hits for the Lancers. Freshman Jonathan Watson/Richmond (L.C. Bird) (1-1) had the pitching win with another complete-game effort for the hosts, yielding just two hits and one earned run with nine strikeouts over the 7.0 innings.
Coppin State was led in the first game by Roman Batista (2-4, 2 RBI) with two hits, including a home run, while Nick Ericson (0-2) suffered the mound loss with the first 7.1 innings -- allowing 16 hits and nine earned runs. The Eagles were led in the second game by Oscar Santalo (1-2, RBI) with a home run, while Brad Bronson (0-2) had the pitching loss with a complete-game effort as well -- scattering seven hits and two earned runs with two strikeouts.
