BOCA RATON, Fla. – Longwood University softball (11-7) dropped its opening game of the Florida Atlantic/Miken Classic against Western Kentucky 1-0 in Boca Raton, Fla. The Lancers return to action at 2 p.m. to face Quinnipiac in game two of the Miken Classic.
Both teams showcased their defense throughout the game, holding the game scoreless until the fifth inning, when Western Kentucky scored the games lone run.
Freshman Briana Wells/Romoland, Calif. (Paloma Valley) pitched the complete game for the Lancers, striking out four batters. Wells falls to 4-2 on the season.
Offensively Longwood struggled to get its bats going, only managing one hit. Senior Caitlin Hooe/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) mustered the Lancers lone hit in the third inning, reaching base on a single to left center.
