BOX SCORE
BOCA RATON, Fla. – Longwood University softball (12-7) dominated its second game of the Florida Atlantic/Miken Classic, defeating Quinnipiac 10-0 on Friday afternoon in Boca Raton, Fla. The Lancers were led by senior Caitlin Hooe/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) who hit 3-3, scoring all three times she reached base. Longwood returns to action Saturday March 15 taking on host Florida Atlantic at 1 p.m.
Longwood wasted no time getting its offense going, scoring two runs in the top of the first. Hooe started things off for the Lancers doubling down the left field line and advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt by Kami Ketsdever/Irvine, Calif. (Irvine). An error by Quinnipiac on a Ryan Washington/Bealeton (Liberty) bunt, would allow the senior short stop to advance to third, scoring Hooe. Washington would come around to score on a passed ball just seconds later.
Hooe and freshman Brittany Matthews/Farmville (Prince Edward) would increase the Lancers lead to 4-0 in the top of the next inning. Matthews would reach base after being walked, while Hooe once again singled to left field. A single to left field by Ketsdever would allow both Hooe and Matthews to score.
Quinnipiac would compose itself in the third and fourth inning, holding the Lancers to a four run lead. Things would change in the top of the fifth inning as Longwood added two more runs by taking advantage of a Quinnipiac error.
Longwood would seal the deal in the sixth inning ending the game due to the NCAA mercy rule after scoring four more runs to take its lead to 10-0. The inning would begin with Kristina Garrison/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) being walked, while the next four Lancer batters reached base on singles. Michelle Phillips/Powhatan (Powhatan) would score Ketsdever after being walked by the Quinnipiac pitcher. Amy Betterton/Rocky Mount (Franklin County) would knock in the last run of the game after hitting a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Tricia Nelson/Plainfield, Ill. (Plainfield Central).
Senior Rachel Mills earned the victory for the Lancers, pitching six innings and striking out five batters.
