Longwood Splits Series With SEMO

Ryan Washington had the Lancers lone run in game one of the double header with SEMO

March 11, 2008

GAME ONE

GAME TWO

BOCA RATON, Fla. - Longwood University softball (11-6) split its series with Southeastern Missouri State on Tuesday evening, losing game one 2-0, and winning game two 12-1. The Lancers return to action on March 14, when they take part in the Florida Atlantic/Miken Classic in Boca Raton, Fla. Longwood will face Western Kentucky at noon on March 14, before facing Quinnipiac at 2 p.m.

Game one of the double header proved to be more about defense than offense, with both teams managing a combined seven hits. Senior short stop Ryan Washington/Bealeton (Liberty) managed Longwoods only hit during the game, singling to the shortstop in the first inning.

Southeast Missouri State would take an early 1-0 lead, scoring in the bottom of the first inning off a slew of singles that allowed Jennifer Vasquez to score. SEMO would take a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning after earning two hits and advancing on a couple of fielders choice.

Longwood would come close to scoring in the top of the sixth inning, after senior Caitlin Hooe/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) reached base on a fielders choice. Hooe would make it to second base on a Kami Nuckols/Glen Allen (Patrick Henry) ground out, but that is as far as Hooe would advance.

Senior Rachel Mills/Quinton (New Kent County) picked up the loss for the Lancers after pitching four innings, striking out two. Mills falls to 4-4 on the season.

The Lancers bounced back in game two, turning everything around from game one with a dominating 12-1 victory. Freshman Briana Wells/Romoland, Calif. (Paloma Valley) picked up her fifth victory of the season, while Catelyn Slagle/Chesapeake (Greenbrier) came in in the fifth inning to close things out for the Lancers.

Wells started the Lancers seven run rally in the fourth inning, after doubling to right field. Longwood would load the bases with the next two batters, courtesy of a walk and a hit by pitch. Nuckols would drive in Wells and Brittany Matthews/Farmville (Prince Edward), singling down the left field line. Nuckols would make her way to second on the same play after beating out the throw to second.

An error by the shortstop would allow Washington to reach base and score Nuckols and Kristina Garrison/Alexandria (Mount Vernon). Emily Radford/Tacoma, Wash. (Fife) would keep the rally going, knocking in two runs after singling to left and advancing to second on the throw.

Longwood would seal the deal in the top of the fifth inning when Slagle entered the game for Wells. Slagle would go on to face five batters, walking two, striking out one and getting the other two to ground out.
