Longwood Falters In Second Half, Falls 11-7

Freshman Kesley Dean scored her 11th goal of the season

FARMVILLE, Va. - Longwood University lacrosse (1-6) fell to American on Tuesday afternoon 11-7 at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. The Lancers were led by freshman Amanda Bereznay/Gwynn Oak, Md. (Setan Keaugh) who had two goals on the afternoon. Longwood returns to action on March 16, when they take on St. Francis at 3 p.m. at Anne Arrundel Community College in Annapolis, Md.

The Lancers started the game with three unanswered goals within the first ten minutes of the half. Senior Allie Armstrong/Chestertown, Md. (Queen Anne’s) started the scoring in the 25th minute of action, after driving down the center of the field. Longwood’s second goal came in the 21st minute from sophomore Page Farmer/Richmond (St. Catherine’s). Freshman Kesley Dean/Centreville, Md. (Queen Anne’s) scored her 11th goal of the season in the 19:26 mark, giving Longwood the 3-0 advantage.

Despite the early scoring frenzy, Longwood would not net another goal until the six minute mark, when Josie Ziluca/Upperville (Loudoun Valley) found the back of the net off a Farmer assist. Bereznay would score her first goal of the game just minutes later off a free position shot, putting the Lancers up 5-3. Dee Warehime/Westminster, Md. (Westminster) put Longwood up 6-3 with 2:47 remaining in the half, collecting her team-leading 16th goal of the season.

American would answer back with 33 seconds remaining in the half, cutting the score to 6-4.

The second half of action would prove to be a very different story for the Lancers, as they would only manage one goal in the half. American took advantage early in the second half, scoring with 26:45 remaining in the game. Brittany Finnegan would tie the game at 6-6 in the 40th minute after earning a free position shot.

Beresznay would give the Lancers a 7-6 lead with 19:35 remaining, after collecting a pass from Liz Sellmayer/Catonsville, Md. (Mount de Sales). American would tie the game back up just seconds later on an unassited goal from Caitlin Bell. American would never look back scoring four more goals, giving them the 11-7 victory.

Senior Jennifer Holliday/Gaithersburg, Md. (Quince Orchard) started in net for the Lancers collecting six saves.
