ATHENS, Ga. - Longwood University softball defeated Michigan State 5-2 in the Georgia Softball Classic on Saturday afternoon in Athens, Georgia. The Lancers improve to 7-5 on the season and 2-2 in the classic. Senior Ryan Washington/Bealeton (Liberty) led the way for the Lancers, hitting 2-4 and picking up two RBI’s.
Longwood wasted no time, putting a run on the board in the first inning when Caitlin Hooe/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) crossed home plate after a Washington single. The Lancers would take a 3-1 lead in the top of the second inning with Tricia Nelson/Plainfiled, Ill. (Plainfield Central) and Camille Ketsdever/Irvine, Calif. (Irvine) scoring two unearned runs.
The Lancers would take advantage of two Michigan State errors in the fifth inning, scoring two more runs and earning a 5-1 advantage. Kami Nuckols/Glen Allen (Patrick Henry) would lead off the fifth inning and reach third base after an error by the left fielder. Washington, who was the next batter up, would also reach base due to an error on the left fielder scoring Nuckols. A few plays later Washington would go on to cross home plate after Michelle Phillips/Powhatan (Powhatan) singled to center field.
Michigan State would try and make a late inning come back, scoring one run in the bottom of the seventh, but it would not be enough.
Freshman Briana Wells/Romoland, Calif. (Paloma Valley) picked up the win for Longwood, pitching the complete game. Wells improves to 3-1 on the season, striking out two.
