EDINBURG, Texas – Longwood University dropped its third straight game on Sunday afternoon in Edinburg, Texas, falling to Chicago State 63-66. The Lancers fall to 11-13 on the season, while Chicago State improves to 10-11. Longwood returns to action on Wednesday, February 6 when they host High Point at Willett Hall.
Longwood shot just 40.7 percent from the floor, while shooting 25.0 percent from outside the three-point arc. Sophomore Becky Fernandes/Fairfax (Bishop Ireton) was the Lancers leading scorer, putting up 15 points. Fernandes shot five for nine from the floor and five for six from the free-throw line.
Chicago States’ Jasmin Dixon was the games leading score with 17 points.
The game began with Chicago State jumping out to a nine point lead before the Lancers were able to get on the board. Junior Amber Sims/Lawrenceville (Brunswick Senior) got things started for Longwood, scoring on a jumper off of an Anna Steg/Vienna (George C. Marshall) assist.
The Lancers never backed down, keeping the pressure on Chicago State throughout the first half, pulling within one point three times. Longwood finally collected the lead at the 6:21 mark, when junior Courtney Dyer/Richmond (Monacan) knocked down a three pointer.
Longwood would not hold the lead long, heading into the locker room trailing by four.
The second half of action started with the Lancers unable to get any of their shots to fall. Chicago State would go on to score 16 unanswered points in the opening minutes of the half, before Longwood could compose itself.
Freshman center Mallory Short/Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) would break the Lancers dry spell in the 13:48 mark, draining a jumper. Shorts jumper would light a fire within Longwood, helping the Lancers pull within two points with 3:14 remaining in the game.
Longwood managed to get within one point of regaining the lead with 1:46 on the clock, but were unable to pull out the victory.
