FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University led 39-27 at halftime en route to a 73-58 victory past visiting Presbyterian College in women’s basketball Sunday afternoon at Willett Hall in Farmville. The Lancers (15-13) won their fourth-straight game and were led by junior Amber Sims/Lawrenceville (Brunswick Senior) with a double-double of 19 points and a career-high 11 rebounds, while the Blue Hose (2-24) were led by Amy Jones with 13 points. Longwood will conclude its regular season next Sunday, March 2, hosting NJIT at Willett Hall in Farmville beginning at 2 p.m..
Longwood scored the first four points of the game against Presbyterian, a program competing in year one of its four-year reclassification to Division I, as junior Anna Steg/Vienna (George C. Marshall) and senior Keiva Small/Norfolk (Norview) scored baskets. The Lancers increased their margin to 12-6 at 14:52 on a layup from Sims before the Blue Hose used a 7-2 run to pull within 14-13 at 13:24 on a jumper by Jones. LU led 22-15 at 7:20 of the first half on another basket inside from Sims, and a jumper by freshman Mallory Short/Richmond (Mill E. Godwin) made it 31-21 at 3:25. The hosts pushed the advantage to 12 points at the intermission, leading 39-27 at the break as Small scored on a layup just before the half ended.
Presbyterian managed to close to within 41-34 with 17:33 remaining but Longwood took complete control with a 19-6 run to lead 60-40 at 10:32. Sims scored nine points during the run, while Short and Small each added four points and freshman Krystal Garrison/Fredericksburg (Courtland) contributed a basket as well. The Lancers led by as many as 22 points down the stretch at 71-49 with 2:35 left to play before the Blue Hose reduced the final margin with nine of the game’s final 11 points, including four points from Jones on free throws.
Sims finished with her first career double-double of a game-high 19 points and a career-high 11 rebounds to lead Longwood. Short added a career-high 14 points for the Lancers, followed by Small with her own double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds. Garrison had nine points and five rebounds, while Steg had six points and six rebounds. LU shot 40% (26-65) from the field, including 13% (1-8) on three-pointers, and 67% (20-30) at the line. The hosts out-rebounded the visitors 58-38, and outscored them 40-12 in the paint, including 20 second-chance points.
Jones finished with 13 points and seven rebounds to lead Presbyterian. Bridget Takach and Sharie Hopkins each had 10 points for the Blue Hose. PC shot 26% (17-65) from the field, including 25% (4-16) on three-pointers, and 95% (20-21) at the line. The visitors did have 10 steals in the contest.
