FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 6-4 baseball decision to visiting Le Moyne College Sunday at Lancer Stadium in Farmville. The Lancers (2-2) split the four-game weekend series against the Dolphins (2-2), and were led at the plate in the series finale by junior Paul Heidler II/Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) (2-4, 3 RBI) who hit a three-run home run with two outs in the fourth inning. Longwood will play again on Wednesday, February 27, at the University of Richmond beginning at 2:30 p.m..
Longwood spotted Le Moyne an early 5-0 in the fourth inning before Heidler’s blast closed the margin to 5-3 after four innings. The Dolphins added a run in the sixth to lead 6-3, but the Lancers could only manage one more run in the ninth inning en route to the home defeat.
In the fourth, sophomore Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (1-4) singled to lead-off and moved to second on a passed ball before junior Jon Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (0-3) walked. Two outs later, Heidler hit the team’s first home run of the season well over the fence in right field and onto the adjacent softball field. In the ninth, sophomore Casey Havers/Thorofare, N.J. (West Deptford) (1-1) had a pinch-hit single to open the inning and he later crossed the plate with two outs on an error.
Le Moyne received a pair of home runs on the day, including one by Chris Edmondson (2-4, RBI) and another from Mike Brown (1-5, 2 RBI). Edmondson’s was a solo homer to lead-off the fifth inning, while Brown’s was also a solo shot that opened the fourth inning. Phil St Amant (2-4) also had two hits for the Dolphins who were aided by three Longwood errors. T.J. Sheridan (1-0) earned the pitching win with the first 5.0 innings, allowing four hits and three earned runs with five strikeouts. Al Ondrako (1) picked-up a save with the final out of the contest.
Junior right-handed pitcher John Walker II/Alexandria (West Potomac) (0-1) took the mound loss with the first 6.0 innings, scattering six hits and three earned runs with one strikeout.
This weekend marked the first-ever meetings between Longwood and Le Moyne in baseball, the Dolphins having advanced to the NCAA Regionals for the third time in five years in 2007 (34-19).
