Longwood Defeats Iona 13-1

Farmville, Va. - Longwood University softball improved to .500 this season, earning a big win on Saturday afternoon, defeating Iona 13-1 as part of the Lancer Spring Classic. Longwood improves to 3-3 on the season and 2-0 in the spring classic. The Lancers return to action on Sunday afternoon as they take on Norfolk State at 10 a.m. and will play again either at 2 p.m. or 4 p.m., depending on tournament seeding.

The Lancers carried their momentum over from game one of the afternoon, defeating Iona 13-1 in another mercy rule situation.

Washington led the offensive charge for the Lancers, batting 4-4 from the plate, scoring one run and batting in two. Washington and Michelle Phillips/Powhatan (Powhatan) both scored in the top of the first inning, after Camille Ketsdever/Irvine, Calif. (Irvine) doubled down the left field line.

Longwood posted three more runs in both the second and third innings, increasing its lead to 9-0, before Iona would get on the board. Iona came back in the bottom of the third inning, scoring one run but were unable to take advantage of its base runners stranding one.

The Lancers sealed the game in the top of the fifth inning, tacking on four more runs after a string of singles. Wells picked up her second win of the season, throwing two and a half innings giving up just one hit.
