BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University was unable to hold onto an early lead, falling 7-2 to Morehead State on Sunday evening in the final game of the Lancer Lead Off Classic. The Lancers fall to 1-3 on the season, while Morehead State improves to 4-0 on the season. Longwood returns to action next February 23-24, when it hosts the Longwood Spring Classic at Lancer Field.

The Lancers hit the ground running in the first inning, putting up two runs courtesy of three Morehead State errors. Junior Caitlin Hooe/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) led off the inning with a double, but was able to advance to third on a throwing error by the left fielder. Senior shortstop Ryan Washington/Bealeton (Liberty) knocked Hooe home, after a similar situation allowed her to triple on a throwing error. Washington made her way home on the next play when sophomore Camille Ketsdever/Irvine, Ca. (Irvine) reached base on an error by the first baseman.

Despite giving up two early runs Morehead State regained its composure, keeping the Lancer offense from getting quality hits throughout the remainder of the game.

Morehead State bounced back in the third inning of action, scoring four runs after a series of ground hits allowed the offence to round the bases. The Eagles sealed the game in the bottom of the sixth inning after tacking on two more runs, making the score 7-2.

Freshman Briana Wells/Romoland, Ca. (Paloma Valley) picked up the loss for the Lancers, falling to 1-1 on the season. Alex Gjevre was the games winning pitcher.
