BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University opened the 2008 with a 2-1 loss to Eastern Michigan as part of the Lancer Lead Off Classic hosted at Lancer Field. The Lancers fall to 0-1 on the season, while Eastern Michigan improves to 2-0. Longwood returns to action later in the evening when they take on Bucknell University at Lancer Field.

Eastern Michigan struck first, scoring in the third inning, after Stephanie Sabo doubled to score Ashley Strauss, who had walked earlier in the inning. Sabo would go onto steal third base before Jenny Scherer singled, knocking Sabo home.

Longwood made a last minute surge in the seventh inning, after Emily Radford/Tacoma, Wash. (Fife) entered the game to pinch hit for Kristina Garrison/Alexandria (Mount Vernon). Radford singled down the third base line. Nichole Simmons/Chesapeake (Hickory) came in to pinch run for Radford and eventually found her way home on a throwing error by the shortstop. That is as close as the Lancers would be able to get, falling 2-1.

Rachael Mills/Quinton (New Kent County) picked up the loss for the Lancers, falling to 0-1 on the season. Kari Chambers was the winning pitcher, improving to 1-0.
