BOX SCORE
FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University defeated Bucknell University, 3-2, as part of the Lancer Lead Off Classic hosted at Lancer Field. The Lancers improve to 1-1 on the season, while Bucknell falls to 0-2. Longwood returns to action Saturday, February 16 at 2 p.m. at Lancer Field.
Longwood jumped on the scoreboard first after senior shortstop Ryan Washington/Bealeton (Liberty) hit a solo home run over the centerfield fence in the fourth inning of action. The home run is Washington’s first of the season. The Lancers added to their lead in the following inning, after Brittany Spencer/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) and Brittany Matthews/Farmville (Prince Edward) crossed the plate.
Spencer scored after Matthews doubled to right field, allowing the senior to head home. Matthews crossed the plate after a series of singles allowed her to move along the base path.
Bucknell did not go down without a fight, as it pulled within one run in the waning moments of the seventh inning. A slew of singles and Longwood errors allowed Lauren Trosch and Jessie Snyder to cross the plate.
Freshman Briana Wells/Romoland, Calif. (Palmoma Valley) picked up her first win and complete game as a Lancer (1-0), while Christie Wiest suffered the loss for Bucknell (0-1).
