WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Longwood University defeated Winston-Salem State on Wednesday night in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, by the final score 65-52. The Lancers improve to 13-13 on the season, while Winston-Salem State falls to 2-19. Longwood returns to action on Sunday, February 17 at 2 p.m., when they host Savannah State at Willett Hall. The game is a special one for the Lancers, as the team will wear pink in order to raise breast cancer awareness.
The first half of action was full of ups and downs for both teams, with neither side being able to find its rhythm. Winston-Salem State was first to get on the board in the 17:25 mark, when Jalesa Byrd hit a three-pointer to put her team up 3-0. Longwood would answer back quickly with a layup by Anna Steg/Vienna (George C. Marshall) with 16:28 left to play, but the Lancers would not take the lead until the 4:20 mark.
In the waning moments of the first half Longwood would take control of the game indefinitely. Sophomore Becky Fernandes/Fort Belvoir (Bishop Ireton) gave the Lancers the lead with a made layup with 1:29 remaining in the half, to put Longwood up 23-22. The Lancers would head into the locker room with a five point lead over Winston-Salem State, 27-22.
Longwood would go on to dominate the second half, gaining a 23 point lead at one point in the half. Senior Keiva Small/Norfolk (Norview) got things started for the Lancers, scoring on a layup in the 18:03 mark. The Lancers would go onto a 23-0 run for a span of eight minutes, before Winston-Salem State was able to sink a basket with 7:18 remaining. Winston-Salem would try and fight its way back into the game, but with little success. Longwood get its lead back to 13 with just two seconds remaining, after a made free-throw by freshman Tamonica Brackins/Springfield (Edison).
Both teams struggled with maintaining possession of the ball throughout the game, with Longwood ending with 25 turnovers to Winston-Salem’s 26. The Lancers shot 37.5 percent from the field, while Winston-Salem shot 34.0 percent.
Small was the games leading scorer and rebounder, posting 18 points and 13 rebounds. Junior Courtney Dyer/Richmond (Monacan) had 12 points for the Lancers, shooting 4-7 from the field. Rene Rector and Corbin Bradford both scored 13 points for Winston-Salem State.
