Longwood Unable To Tame Texas Pan-American, Fall 79-74

Amber Sims Tallied 15 Points in Lancer Loss

EDINBURG, Texas Longwood University fell 79-74 to Texas Pan-American on Friday evening in Edinburg, Texas. The Lancers fall to 11-12 on the season, while the Broncs snap a seven game losing streak. Longwood returns to action on Sunday, February 2, when they take on Chicago State from the UTPA Fieldhouse in Edinburg.

The Lancers ended the game with four players scoring in double-digits, including junior Amber Sims/Lawrenceville (Brunswick) who led the team in points with 15. Sims also ended the night with seven rebounds and two assists.

Longwood out-shot and out-rebounded UTPA, but were unable to get several of their shots to fall. The Lancers ended the game shooting 37.9 percent from the floor, while UTPA shot 50.0 percent.

The first half started with both teams swapping possession of the lead, before Longwood jumped out on top. The Lancers finally took control of the half in at the 12:09 mark, when freshman Cierra Baker/Windsor, Conn. (Windsor) hit a jumper in the paint, helping the Lancers take a one point lead.

The Broncs refused to go down without a fight, stealing the Lancers lead with 4:41 remaining in the half. UTPA headed into the locker room with a four point advantage over Longwood, 41-37.

UTPA came out of the gates strong in the second half, racking up a 12 point lead, keeping Longwood off the board until the 16:55 mark. The Lancers battled their way back into the game, closing the gap to one point with 2:56 remaining, after sophomore Becky Fernandes/Fairfax (Bishop Ireton) made a layup and was fouled.

Despite battling tough in the concluding minutes of the game, Longwood was unable to topple the Broncs, resulting in the teams second consecutive loss.
