Longwood Falls At Charleston Southern 3-2; Next At USC Foe NJIT Saturday

Sophomore Kayla Huggins Tallies Two Goals Against Lady Bucs

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Longwood University dropped a 3-2 women's soccer decision on the road at Charleston Southern University Monday afternoon in South Carolina.  The Lancers are now 6-4-1, while the Lady Bucs of the Big South Conference improved to 6-4-2.  Longwood will play again this Saturday, October 11, on the road again for its third-straight match at fellow United Soccer Conference (USC) opponent NJIT in Newark, New Jersey beginning at 1 p.m..
   
In South Carolina, the two teams battled scoreless through the opening 45 minutes while tied at 0-0 at the intermission.  Longwood took a 1-0 advantage early in the second half at 54:21 when sophomore Kayla Huggins/North Haven, Conn. (North Haven) found the back of the net with her shot in close after a cross from classmate Halie Romasco/Yorktown (Grafton).  Charleston Southern, however, responded with two quick goals just 2:51 apart as Emma Mattsson (61:50) and Michelle Dennis (64:41)?each tallied scores.  The Lancers tied it at 2-2 with just 10:52 remaining as Huggins scored her second goal of the match, and team-leading fourth of the season, unassisted at 79:08.  Unfortunately, the Lady Bucs answered just 14-seconds later with the decisive goal by Sarah Catenacci at 79:22 on a shot from the top-center of the box.
   
Charleston Southern took a 28-6 advantage in shots, including 11-4 in attempts on-goal, while having a 10-3 edge in corner kicks as well.  Redshirt-sophomore keeper Marcia Biddle/Woodbridge (Gar-Field) made eight saves while playing the duration in front of the net for Longwood.  Alyssa Budros played the entire match in goal for the Lady Bucs as well with two saves.
   
Longwood and CSU have now played five times since 2004 with the Lancers leading the series 3-2.
