BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took a 5-1 women's soccer victory past visiting United Soccer Conference (USC) opponent South Carolina State Friday night at the Athletics Complex in Farmville.  The Lancers earned their first win during the month of October while also stopping a four-match winless streak (0-3-1), improving their record to 7-5-2, 2-0-1 in the USC; the Bulldogs dropped to 1-8-1, 0-4 in the USC.  Longwood is scheduled to play again on Sunday, October 19, on the road for another conference match at Delaware State University in Dover, Delaware beginning at 3 p.m..

Longwood took a 1-0 lead at 29:10 when sophomore Alex Myers/Stafford (Colonial Forge) scored after dribbling in and beating the keeper with her shot to the right upper 90.  The Lancers made it 2-0 at 31:54 as freshman Claire Hundley/Norfolk (Maury) tallied her first collegiate goal when she collected a loose ball in front of the net and promptly found the back of the net for what would also prove to be the game-winner.  South Carolina State closed the margin to 2-1 with a goal at 38:11 by Tereza Govrik who also found a loose ball in the box after a corner kick.  It remained a one-goal contest at the intermission.

The hosts finally put the match away with back-to-back goals at 72:47 and 73:42 as sophomore Lauren Trizna/Manassas (Osbourn Park) and junior Tia Nardella/Brookline, Mass. (Brookline) each scored.  Trizna tallied on a header from a corner-kick serve from Myers, and Nardella took a nice pass from freshman Nikki Supsic/Northumberland, Pa. (Shikellamy) to beat the keeper.  LU added a final goal at 88:46 when freshman Nancy Wright/Richmond (James River) scored her first collegiate goal after receiving a fine feed from sophomore Kayla Huggins/North Haven, Conn. (North Haven).

Longwood took a 22-2 advantage in shots, including 14-2 in attempts on-goal, while the Lancers also had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.  Redshirt-sophomore keeper Marcia Biddle/Woodbridge (Gar-Field) (45:00) played the first half for the hosts, while freshman keeper Kristen McGough/Round Rock, Texas (Stony Point) (45:00) played the second half with one save.  Alechia Brothers played the duration for S.C. State with nine saves.  Longwood scored a season-high five goals while improving its series record against the Bulldogs to 4-0 since first playing in 2005.

It was Senior Night on Friday for Ingrid Hale/Littleton, Colo. (Chatfield), Cassie Lynn/Virginia Beach (Kellam), Beth Shade/Mechanicsburg, Pa. (Cedar Cliff), and Maddie Stevens/Charles Town, W.Va. (Jefferson).  The four have now helped Longwood to an overall record of 35-28-7 during their respective careers.
