FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University dropped a 69-60 women’s basketball decision to visiting Winthrop University Wednesday night at Willett Hall in Farmville. The Lancers (8-10) were led by senior Keiva Small/Norfolk (Norview) with a game-high 24 points, while the Eagles (9-6) of the Big South Conference were led by Ashley Fann with 14 points as the visitors led from start to finish. Longwood will play again next Thursday, January 17, hosting Radford University, also of the Big South, in Farmville beginning at 7 p.m. -- a game designated “PACK THE HOUSE NIGHT”.
Winthrop took an early 14-6 advantage at 13:35 as three different players made three-point field goals and Fann capped the quick start with an old-fashioned three-point play. The Eagles maintained their lead and extended the margin to 25-14 at 7:34 on another three-pointer. Longwood closed to 29-20 with 5:14 left until the break after a pair of free throws from Small, but the visitors outscored the Lancers 9-4 to close the period for a 38-24 lead at the intermission. Small had 10 points during the opening 20 minutes for the hosts.
Winthrop took its largest lead of the contest early in the second half at 48-33 with 15:22 left on a jumper from Fann. Longwood, however, refused to go away and battled back into the contest with a 16-7 run to pull within 55-49 at 4:41. Juniors Courtney Dyer/Richmond (Monacan) and Anna Steg/Vienna (George C. Marshall) sparked the run as Dyer made consecutive three-pointers and Steg scored inside twice. The Eagles, though, scored seven of the next 10 points to lead by 10 points at 62-52 with just 1:46 remaining. The Lancers managed to close to within 65-60 at 0:31 on a three-pointer from Small but the visitors secured the road victory with 4-6 free throws over the final half-minute.
Small finished with a game-high 24 points to lead Longwood, adding eight rebounds and two steals, while Dyer had 11 points and two assists for the Lancers. Steg contributed seven points and eight rebounds. LU shot 31% (20-65) from the field, including 19% (6-32) on three-point field goals, and 82% (14-17) at the free throw line.
Fann finished with 14 points to lead Winthrop, adding seven rebounds and three assists, while Franchesca Davenport had 13 points for the Eagles. WU shot 53% (24-45) from the field, including 47% (7-15) on three-pointers, and 67% (14-21) at the line.
