Longwood Falls To Yale 78-73

Senior Captain Brandon Giles Scores 11 Points, Adds Five Assists Against Bulldogs

FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University dropped a hard-fought 78-73 men’s basketball decision to visiting Yale University Tuesday night at Willett Hall in Farmville; a game that featured 13 lead-changes and 10 ties. The Lancers (4-15) were led by junior Kirk Williams/White Plains, N.Y. (Woodlands) with a game-high 20 points, while the Ivy League Bulldogs (5-8) were led by Eric Flato with 19 points. Longwood will play again next Tuesday, January 15, hosting Campbell University of the Atlantic Sun Conference in Farmville beginning at 7 p.m..

Longwood led early in the contest against Yale, taking a 9-2 advantage at 16:32 after five quick points from senior Lamar Barrett/Providence, R.I. (St. Andrews), a dunk from Williams, and a jumper from junior Ryan Bogan/Oxford, Pa. (Harcum JC). The Bulldogs, however, scored eight unanswered points to lead 10-9 at 13:32. The Lancers remained ahead for most of the opening half, leading 21-20 at 5:16 before Yale used a 16-9 run over the final 4:54 of the period to lead 36-30 at the intermission. Flato scored five points during the run and finished the half with eight points, while Barrett scored nine first-half points for the hosts.

Yale maintained its narrow lead early in the second half, in front 43-38 at 15:02 after a dunk from Matt Kyle. Longwood, though, battled back with seven-straight points, including five from Williams, to lead 45-43 at 12:31 on a three-point field goal by Williams. The Bulldogs re-took the lead and led 59-56 with 7:39 remaining on a three-point play inside from Ross Morin, and the two teams traded the lead a couple of more times before the Lancers extended their advantage to 70-65 at 3:17 following a three-pointer from senior Brandon Giles/Gaithersburg, Md. (Magruder). Yale responded with a 9-0 run to lead 74-70 with just 29-seconds remaining, making 6-6 free throws over the final 29-seconds to secure the road win. Alex Zampier and Travis Pinick made consecutive three-pointers to tie it at 70-70 (2:09), and Pinick added a layup at 1:19 to take the lead for good (72-70) -- Pinick’s trey was his first of the year (1-11) -- before Zampier (4-4) and Morin (2-2) sealed it at the free throw line.

Williams finished with a game-high 20 points to lead Longwood, adding seven rebounds and four assists, while Barrett had 15 points, eight rebounds, and four assists for the Lancers. Giles contributed 11 points and five assists. LU shot 46% (26-57) from the field, including 40% (8-20) on three-point field goals, and 81% (13-16) at the free throw line.

Flato finished with 19 points to lead Yale, while Morin had 17 points and eight rebounds for the Bulldogs. Zampier added 14 points off the bench, and Pinick contributed nine points off the bench. YU shot 50% (27-54) from the field, including 38% (9-24) on three-pointers, and 72% (15-21) at the line.
