BOX SCORE
SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Longwood University received 11 points from junior Courtney Dyer/Richmond (Monacan), but it was not enough in a 56-52 women's basketball loss at Savannah State University (10-11) Sunday afternoon in Georgia. The loss gives the Lancers a record of 11-11, and breaks the team's recent three-game win streak. Longwood returns to action on Friday, February 1, when the team heads to Texas to face Texas Pan-American at 8 p.m.
Savannah State had three players finish in double-digit point totals, including Antoinette Williams who scored a game-high 21 points. Senior Keiva Small/Norfolk (Norview) scored nine points for the Lancers, while freshman Krystal Garrision/Fredericksburg (Courtland) and junior Anna Steg/Vienna (George C. Marshall) each scored eight.
Longwood had trouble getting its offense going during the game, shooting just 36.2 percent on the night and 4-18 from beyond the 3-point arc. The Lancer defense on the other hand held Savannah State to 38.6 percent shooting and stole the ball six times. Longwood's Dyer finished tied with Williams of Savannah State in steals with three.
The game started off as a defensive battle, with Longwood grabbing the lead right out of the gate. However, the Lancers were unable to hold that lead for long, falling behind until the 16.53 mark where they tied the game. Longwood regained the lead at the 13:50 mark, but quickly had it stolen by Savannah State just seconds later. The Lancers would go on to hold the lead just once more in the first half, before heading into the locker room down 24-18.
Savannah State maintained that advantage in the second half, never giving up possession of the lead despite being outscored by the Lancers 34-32.
The Lancers won the battle of the boards 37-26, while also having the advantage in turnovers committing on 25, compared to Savannah States 26.
