Longwood Falls At High Point 68-54

Senior Brandon Giles Scores 11 Points Against Panthers In North Carolina

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Longwood University lost a 68-54 men’s basketball road game at High Point University of the Big South Conference Thursday night at the Millis Athletic Center in High Point, North Carolina. The Lancers (4-19) were led by junior Kirk Williams/ White Plains, N.Y. (Woodlands) with 14 points, while Arizona Reid led the Panthers (10-8) with game-highs of 28 points and 14 rebounds. Longwood will play again next Monday, January 28, at Hofstra University of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) in Hempstead, New York beginning at 7 p.m..

Longwood played well early at High Point, leading 14-13 with 10:21 left in the first half after consecutive baskets from Williams. The contest was tied at 17-17 with 8:50 on the clock following a three-point field goal by senior Brandon Giles/Gaithersburg, Md. (Magruder). Reid paced the Panthers early with 12 of his team’s first 17 points, and the hosts used a 13-3 run to lead by 10 points at 30-20 with 3:17 remaining until halftime. The visitors closed the period with a 6-2 run to trail 32-26 at the intermission despite 18 first-half points from Reid.

High Point maintained the advantage in the second half as the score stood at 38-32 with 16:37 to play after a layup from junior Ryan Bogan/Oxford, Pa. (Harcum JC). Reid, though, added six more quick points during a 12-4 run to push the lead to 50-36 at 10:31 and Longwood never threatened the remainder of the contest. The Lancers only managed to pull within 10 points on three occasions over the final 8:09, including 56-46 at 4:48 following a three-pointer by senior Lamar Barrett/Providence, R.I. (St. Andrews). The Panthers largest lead of the night was 65-49 with just 2:26 on the clock.

Williams finished with 14 points, adding eight rebounds, three assists, and two steals to lead Longwood. Giles had 11 points (3-3 3FG) and three assists, while Barrett contributed 10 points and seven rebounds for the Lancers. LU shot 33% (20-60) from the field, including 35% (8-23) on three-point field goals, and 46% (6-13) at the free throw line.

Reid finished with game-highs of 28 points, 14 rebounds, and five steals to lead High Point. Eugene Harris had 13 points, and Mike Jefferson added nine points and a game-high 12 assists for the Panthers. HP shot 48% (26-54) from the field, including 21% (3-14) on three-pointers, and 68% (13-19) at the line.

High Point now leads the all-time series between the two schools at 12-5, including both games this season after winning 80-68 in Farmville on December 1.
