Longwood Will Look To Rebound In Tomorrow's Contest With Rider

BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va.-- Longwood University field hockey fell to the visiting Davidson Wildcats 4-1 Saturday afternoon at the Athletics Complex in Farmville.  The loss puts the Lancers at 0-6 on the season while Davidson improves to 3-1 on the year.  Longwood will look to rebound Sunday, September 9 when they host Rider in 12 p.m. match-up.

Longwood and Davidson each tested the other’s defense early looking for the first goal of the game.  The Wildcats jumped on the board first, as Kayli Maxwell was able to put away a penalty stroke just 9:15 into the game.  Davidson padded their lead to two goals four minutes later, as Eleanor Cowley tipped a shot by Lisa Landone past Avanell Schmitz/Newport News (Denbigh) for the 2-0 lead.  The Wildcats tacked on a third goal 2:51 before halftime on a goal by Britti Himelfarb to put the Lancers in a 3-0 hole heading into the break.

The Lancers came out of the break looking to break onto the scoreboard and had a chance early in half as Jessica Mantel/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) received a pass from Kate Claxton/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) and ran in for a one-on-one with the Wildcats keeper.  Davidson’s keeper Christa Goeke charged out of the cage and tipped the ball away from Mantel to keep Longwood looking for their first goal.  After the Wildcats’ Maxwell recorded her second goal of the game, Longwood’s Lauren Sullivan/Fredericksburg (Stafford) recorded her first goal in her collegiate career putting back a rebound off an earlier shot to break the Davidson shut out.  That’s as close as the Lancers would get as Longwood is still in search of its first win of the season.

Schmitz recorded the loss and made 11 saves in 70:00 of action while Goeke made 12 saves in the win.  Longwood held a 19-17 margin in shot while Davidson recorded five penalty corners to Longwood’s three.
