BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va.-- Longwood University men’s soccer dominated its 2-1 win over North Florida Friday night in Farmville out shooting the Ospreys by a 25-9 margin.  The Lancers’ (2-1) recorded the go ahead goal in the 27th minute on a diving header by Harvey Headley/Coventry, England (Stoke Park) to grab the lead for good over UNF (1-2).  Longwood will wrap-up the Lancer Invitational on Sunday, September 9 at 1 p.m. hosting Winthrop, who grabbed a 2-1 win of its own over George Washington in the earlier contest.

The Lancers showed their offensive presence from the opening whistle as Brian Germain/McLean, Va. (Langley) put a shot just wide two minutes into the contest for Longwood’s first opportunity of the night.  Martin Vickerton/Derbyshire, England (Kirk Hallam Technical College) put the Lancers on the board on a free-kick just outside the 18-yard box that nailed the top left corner for the 1-0 lead just 11:47 into the game.

North Florida’s Adam O’Neill was able to put away a penalty kick at the 17:45 mark to tie the game at one a piece.  O’Neill carried the ball into Longwood’s 18-yard box and was taken down by a Longwood defender that drew a whistle and send the forward to the stripe.  Brandt Youmans/Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus) made a diving attempt to his left and got a hand on the ball but could not stop the shot for UNF’s only goal of the game.

Longwood regrouped and came right back three minutes later as Johan Karlhagen/Gothenburg, Sweden (Katrinelund) served a ball inside the Osprey’s 18-yard box that Headley tracked down and put it in the back of the net on the diving header to give the Lancers the lead with fifteen minutes to go before the break.

UNF had two opportunities to knot the score in the second half but could not convert to keep the game at 2-1.  Akil Defreitas received a through ball 30-yards out and ran in for a one on one with Youmans.  Defreitas tried to beat Youmans to the right but the senior keeper got a hand on it putting the shot wide.  O’Neill had a chance to record his second of the game picking up a loose ball in the box and firing it at a wide open net that was hit out of play by Gary Smith/ Ashland (Patrick Henry) to preserve the 2-1 Longwood win.

Youmans finished the game with three saves, while North Florida’s Andrew Calise tallied eight in ninety minutes of action.

North Florida and George Washington will open up play on Sunday as opening kick-off is scheduled for 10 a.m. followed by the Longwood/Winthrop match-up at 1 p.m.
