FARMVILLE, Va. -- For the second-straight year, Longwood University will be hosting the 54-hole Poplar Hill Intercollegiate men’s golf tournament September 10-11 at The Manor Golf Club (formerly the Poplar Hill Golf Club) just south of Farmville. The two-day event will open the 2007-08 campaign and features a field of 13 schools, including the host Lancers, along with Duquesne, Gardner-Webb, Hampden-Sydney, Hampton, James Madison, Liberty, Long Island, Mount St. Mary’s, North Carolina Central, Presbyterian, Savannah State, and Winston-Salem State. Ten individuals will complete the field of 75 collegiate golfers.
“It is a pleasure, once again, to host the Poplar Hill Intercollegiate at The Manor Golf Club,” explained 11th-year Longwood head coach Kevin Fillman. “For an inaugural event, last year’s tournament was a great success. Both Longwood Athletics and The Manor are working hard to ensure an even better event this year. Poplar Hill is always a great challenge, and we’re very fortunate to be able to bring in some top intercollegiate players to compete there.
“I’m also very proud to be able to invite teams from outside the area to Farmville, so they can see all the great things we have to offer around here.”
The Manor Golf Club is an 18-hole championship course that opened in June 2006 and features bent grass greens, fairways, and tees. The Manor will play 7,214 yards, par 72 during the event. The schedule of events will include practice rounds for the participating schools on Sunday, September 9, starting at 1 p.m. and followed by a pre-tournament dinner at 6 p.m. that evening at The Manor GC. A 36-hole opening day of collegiate golf will take place on Monday, September 10, beginning at 8:30 a.m. before the final round on Tuesday, September 11, starting at 8:30 a.m. as well. An awards ceremony is also scheduled for Tuesday when competition is completed at approximately 1:30 p.m..
“We are happy to once again be the host site for the Poplar Hill Intercollegiate at The Manor Golf Club,” said John Prengaman, The Manor’s General Manager and Head Golf Professional. “We are proud of our relationship with Longwood University and its successful golf program. Last year’s inaugural event was a real success and this year should prove to be even better.”
The inaugural Poplar Hill Intercollegiate men’s tournament took place last October 23-24 and featured 11 teams, including Longwood. The Lancers (304-313-308--925) were runners-up to Kennesaw State (304-293-314--911) in the 54-hole event, led by current sophomore Adam Webb/Ridgeway (Magna Vista) who finished third individually at 77-77-72--226. Longwood advanced to NCAA Division I post-season in its first year of eligibility last May 17-19 as the #24 seed at the NCAA East Regional in Alpharetta, Georgia. Coach Fillman, the 2007 Eaton Golf Pride Mid-Atlantic Regional Coach of the Year by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA), returns six letterwinners from last year’s NCAA Regional team and has added two talented newcomers to the program.
