BOX SCORE
QUEENS, N.Y.-- Longwood University men’s soccer forced overtime with less than a minute remaining in regulation and scored the golden goal in the second overtime defeating Adelphi 2-1 Saturday evening in New York. Junior Trey Thornton/Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) forced overtime and senior
Sean Harney/Chesterfield (Lloyd C. Bird) gave the Lancers (3-3-2, 1-0) the win over the Panthers (0-7-2, 0-1) for their first Atlantic Soccer Conference win of the season. Longwood will return to action on Wednesday, October 3 as they travel to Washington, D.C. to take on the Colonials in a 3 p.m. contest.
Adelphi wasted no time to break onto the scoreboard, as Kemalie Preston broke up a Longwood clear and knocked in an eight-yard shot for the 1-0 lead just 8:40 into the contest. The Panthers continued to pressure the Lancer defense but Longwood and
Brandt Youmans/Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus) kept the game at an one goal deficit heading into the break.
The Lancers came out of the break looking to find the equalizer. After out shooting the Panthers by a 7-3 margin in the second half, Longwood made a late run and was able to tally a goal with 0:17 remaining in regulation. Freshman
Yaron Bacher/Marietta, Ga. (Walton) sent a serve in the box where Thornton put his head on it and flicked it over the Panthers’ keeper for his first goal as a Lancer and sending the game into overtime.
After a scoreless first overtime period sophomore
Chernor Diallo/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) found Harney and served a through ball to the midfielder’s feet where Harney finished the play and one timed a shot in for the 2-1 win.
Youmans finished the game with two saves in 104:30 of time while Adelphi’s Vincent Treglia tallied four saves in the loss. Longwood held a 11-9 count in shots and recorded four corner kicks to Adelphi’s three.
