FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took a 2-1 women’s soccer home victory past visiting United Soccer Conference (USC) opponent Utah Valley University Friday night at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. Senior Brittany Stubbs/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) tallied her first collegiate goal at 83:44 for the game-winner in the conference match. The Lancers won their second-straight game and improved to 3-4 overall, 2-0 in the USC, while Utah Valley dropped to 1-6-1, 1-1 in the USC. Longwood will play again Sunday, September 30, hosting Coastal Carolina University at the Athletics Complex in Farmville beginning at 2 p.m..

“Obviously, we’re really happy to get another positive result at home,” said 14th-year head coach Todd Dyer. “Kayla Huggins did about as much as you can do in a game, and created a lot of chances out of nothing with her pace and work rate, and those shots will start going in for her -- she really got us going tonight. It was also nice to see Brittany Stubbs rewarded for her efforts as a senior and get her first goal.”

Stubbs’ decisive goal came with just 6:16 remaining on a corner kick opportunity by Longwood when she took a rebound off the post and put the loose ball into the back of the net. Classmate Aynsley Birkner/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) had headed the kick from sophomore Brenda Cary/Bristow (Brentsville) off the post before Stubbs made her kick count -- the first collegiate goal for the defender.

The Lancers had taken a 1-0 lead at 25:58 when sophomore Michelle DeSieno/Centreville (Chantilly) took a nice through-ball pass from classmate Sarah Fening/Manassas (Battlefield) and one-timed the ball into the bottom left corner of the net. Utah Valley, however, responded quickly and tied the match at 1-1 as Kelly Vide tallied on a loose ball in the box at 33:33, and it remained 1-1 at the intermission.

Longwood took an 18-9 advantage in shots, and had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks as freshman standout forward Kayla Huggins/North Haven, Conn. (North Haven) led the attack with 10 shots, including nine on-goal, surpassing the total attempts by Utah Valley. Redshirt-freshman keeper Marcia Biddle/Woodbridge (Gar-Field) made five saves while playing the duration in front of the net for the Lancers. Opposing keeper Mallory Schott played very well for the Wolverines with 13 saves, including several point-blank attempts by Huggins, to keep the visitors close.
