BOX SCORE

RALEIGH, N.C.-- Longwood University men’s soccer recorded its second consecutive tie, battling North Carolina State for 110:00 for a 1-1 tie in Raleigh, N.C. Wednesday afternoon.  Sean Harney/Chesterfield (Lloyd C. Bird) tallied the Lancers’ (2-3-2) goal on a penalty kick in the 61st minute for the 1-0 lead, before NC State’s (3-2-2) Orry Powers knotted the score at one twenty minutes later.  The Lancers will return to action on Saturday, September 29, when they travel to Adelphi for their first Atlantic Soccer Conference match-up of the year.  Kick-off set for 7 p.m..

After a scoreless first half Longwood was able to draw a foul in the box just 16 minutes into the second half.  Harney placed the ball perfectly, beating the Wolfpack’s Christopher Widman for the 1-0 lead.  North Carolina State pressured Longwood’s defense and senior goal keeper Brandt Youmans/Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus) looked to grab the equalizer.  NC State jumped on the scoreboard twenty minutes later on a 30-yard free kick by Powers with nine minutes to go in the game to send the game into overtime.

In the first extra period Longwood came out and kept the majority of play in North Carolina State’s end as Elvis Cosic/Richmond (J.R. Tucker) fired a shot on net that was saved by Widman keeping the game tied.  Sophomore Martin Vickerton/Derbyshire, England (Kirk Hallam Technical College) sent a corner kick into NC State’s box but no one could get to the other end of the kick as the ball was sent out of the box sending the game into the second overtime period.  NC State and Longwood continued to battle in the second overtime as each squad racked off two shots.  The Lancers defense and Youmans remained strong and kept everything out of the back of the net to end the game in a 1-1 stalemate.

Youmans tallied eight saves while Widman collected five.  The Wolfpack out shot the Lancers 17-10 while Longwood had a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.
