BOX SCORE

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-- Longwood University field hockey fell 3-0 to the #19 Boston Terriers Saturday afternoon in a neutral site match-up held at Virginia's University Hall Turf Field.  Sarah Shute led the way for the Terriers (7-2) scoring two goals to lift Boston over Longwood (2-9).  The Lancers will return to action on Sunday, September 30, hosting Georgetown in a 12 p.m. match up at the Athletics Complex.

Suus Dekker put the Terriers up 1-0 in the third minute of play as she converted a stroke. BU had gained the circle and pulled out Longwood’s Avanell Schmitz/Newport News (Denbigh); the resulting shot was blocked on the line by a Longwood foot, sending the Terriers to the strokemark. Dekker went upper left, scoring at 2:37 and giving the Terriers the early lead. Despite notching four short corners and peppering the LU cage with 11 shots, BU was only able to manage a 1-0 lead at the break as Schmitz made eight saves to keep her team close. BU missed an opportunity to double its lead with eight minutes to play in the half when the Terriers drew another stroke, but Schmitz made the save to keep the score 1-0.

In the second half, BU struck early again as Shute intercepted a pass and attacked the cage, scoring from just inside the circle at 40:06.  Ten minutes later she duplicated that effort, picking up a loose ball above the 25 and taking it in on her own to score at 52:31 for her second goal of the game to give the Terriers a 3-0 lead.  Longwood drew its first short corner of the match at 65:30 but was unable to convert the initial try; the Lancers drew a second one immediately but were also unable to dent the boards.

Schmitz made 11 saves, including eight in the first half to keep the Lancers within striking distance at the break while BU’s Kim Katsuk tallied one save.  The Terriers outshot Longwood 17-4, including 11-1 in the first half and recorded four penalty corners to Longwood’s two.
