BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a disappointing though hard-fought 1-0 women’s soccer decision in overtime to visiting Appalachian State University Thursday night at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. The Lancers are now 1-4 this season, while the Mountaineers improved to 4-0-2. Longwood will play again on Saturday, September 22, hosting fellow United Soccer Conference opponent NJIT at the Athletics Complex beginning at 2 p.m..

Against Appalachian State, Longwood battled the unbeaten Mountaineers evenly throughout the contest despite playing without the services of six starters out with various injuries. ASU took the road win with an own-goal just 1:46 into the extra overtime period when Caroline Lowe’s corner kick serve deflected off an LU player into the net to end the match. The Lancers had missed a scoring opportunity during the first minute of the OT when freshman Kayla Huggins/North Haven, Conn. (North Haven) hard shot attempt was saved by visiting keeper Emma White. Ironically and unfortunately, Huggins’ had blasted another scoring attempt off the post in the opening minute of the game as well. The first-year standout led LU with five shots, including three on goal.

Appalachian State took a 12-10 advantage in shots, led by Lowe’s four attempts, and had a 7-1 edge in corner kicks during the contest. Longwood redshirt-freshman keeper Marcia Biddle/Woodbridge (Gar-Field) (91:46) made her first collegiate start and played very well during the entire match in front of the net for the Lancers with six saves. White (46:46) played the second half and overtime for the Mountaineers with three saves, while Caroline Clarke (45:00) started and played the first half with two saves for the combined ASU shutout.
