FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took a 1-0 men’s soccer home victory past visiting Rider University Sunday afternoon at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. It was the first win of the season for the Lancers who improved to 1-1, while the Broncs dropped to 0-1. Longwood will remain home to host the Lancer Invitational September 7-9 at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. The Lancers will play the University of North Florida on Friday night, Sept. 7, beginning at 8 p.m. following the event’s first contest between George Washington University and Winthrop University at 5 p.m..
Against Rider, the two teams battled scoreless for nearly the entire first half before Longwood freshman Yaron Bacher/Marietta, Ga. (Walton) took a loose ball in the eighteen and promptly placed it to the far corner for his first collegiate goal for the Lancers at 44:02. It would prove to the only goal of the match as the hosts took their first shutout of the campaign as senior keeper Brandt Youmans/Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus) preserved the triumph with three saves while playing the duration in front of the net.
Longwood took a 16-5 advantage in shots, and had a 2-1 edge in corner kicks. Jesse Forsythe (90:00) also played the entire contest in goal for Rider with five saves.
The participation of Winthrop in the upcoming Lancer Invitational will mark the return of former Longwood men’s soccer head coach Rich Posipanko, now the coach of the Eagles from the Big South Conference. Posipanko coached the Lancers from 1979-1988, compiling an impressive record of 117-49-21 during his 10 years before leaving for Winthrop.
