BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took a 1-0 women’s soccer home victory past visiting Radford University Sunday night at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. It was the first win of the season for the Lancers who improved to 1-1, while the Highlanders dropped to 0-2. Longwood will play again this upcoming weekend in Annapolis, Maryland while participating in the Navy Soccer Invitational September 7-9 as the Lancers will play Towson University on Friday, Sept. 7, at 4 p.m..

Against Radford, the two teams battled evenly throughout the contest as the lone goal of the match was an own-goal defected into the net by the Highlanders’ keeper early in the second half at 53:32. Longwood freshman Katie Devlin/Fairfax (W.T. Woodson) had blasted a shot high from about 30-yards out that RU’s Alex Traughber got a hand on and stopped but then deflected back into the net while trying to control. The visitors had their best opportunity to tie the match with just over 17 minutes remaining on a shot inside the box that senior keeper Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) made a diving save to her right on the ball, while the Lancers also had a last-minute shot attempt hit off the crossbar.

Longwood took a 6-5 edge in shots, while Radford had a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. Devlin had two shots on goal for the Lancers while McKenzie Vergara and Jackie Cozza each had two shots on goal for the Highlanders. Whitmore (90:00) went the distance in front of the net for the hosts with five saves for her first shutout of the season, while Traughber (90:00) also played the duration for RU with three saves.
