LYNCHBURG, Va.-- Longwood University men’s soccer battled Liberty to a 0-0 tie in Lynchburg Wednesday afternoon. The Lancers move to 2-3-1 on the year while the Flames stand at 4-1-1 overall. Longwood will return to action on Wednesday, September 26, when they travel to Raleigh, N.C. to take on North Carolina State in a 4 p.m. match-up.
The Lancers and Flames battled from the opening kick- off as each team looked to break onto the scoreboard. After a battle in the midfield for the opening twelve minutes the Flames racked off the first shot on a ball that went wide of the Longwood net. Sophomore
Giovanni Peralta/Lorton (Robert E. Lee) put the first shot on goal for the Lancers with less than five minutes remaining in the half. The shot was saved by Liberty’s Paul Gilbert to send the teams into the halftime break with with zeros across the board.
Longwood came out of the break threatening as sophomore
Chernor Diallo/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) fired a shot on net that was saved by Gilbert keeping the Lancers scoreless. Liberty’s Joshua Boateng tested the Lancers’ senior keeper
Brandt Youmans/Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus) nine minutes into the second half, but Youmans stood strong making his first save of the game. Longwood was able to get back-to-back corners with fifteen minutes remaining in regulation. On the second corner sophomore
Brian Germain/McLean (Langley) pulled a shot wide of Liberty’s net keeping the game at a 0-0 stalemate. The Lancers and Flames continued to battle in the final 15 but neither squad could put a point on the board as the two teams headed into overtime. At the end of regulation the game was practically even on the stat sheet as shots were at seven a piece and corner kicks were 5-3 in Longwood’s favor.
The overtime was similar to the first and second half with no deciding goal scored as both teams battled for the entire 110:00 earning their first tie of the season.
Youmans finished the game with two saves while Gilbert tallied three. Germain led the Lancers tallying three shots.
