FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University finished third among three teams at the inaugural Longwood University Cross Country Invitational at the Longwood Golf Club Saturday in Farmville. The Lancers (0-2) fell to Liberty 23-34 and to Campbell 19-36 in the dual-meet-scored race as Liberty (2-0) won the event, followed by Campbell (1-1) as the Camels’ Baillie Locke won the 5K race in 19:12. Longwood will compete again on September 29 at the Lehigh Invitational in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
Longwood was led by sophomore Jacquelyne Chantry/Williamsburg (Lafayette) with her time of 19:47 to finish fifth among 29 collegiate runners. Chantry was followed by classmate Kate Knupp/Edinburg (Central) (20:41, 11th), freshman Natalie Auble/Fairfax (Fairfax) (20:53, 12th), along with sophomores Laura Bland/Las Vegas, Nev. (Palo Verde) (21:00, 13th) and Elizabeth Owens/Disputanta (Prince George) (21:07, 14th). Chantry, Bland, and Owens each ran new collegiate career-bests for 5K.
Also running for the Lancers were freshman Mandy Ford/Powhatan (Powhatan) (21:16, 15th), sophomore Priscilla Sherwood/Newport News (Woodside) (22:02, 17th), freshman Lauren Kuhns/Fredericksburg (Riverbend) (22:10, 18th), senior Kristin Novara/Winchester (Millbrook) (22:14, 19th), sophomore Melinda Lackore/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) (22:51, 22nd), as well as freshmen Jamie Upshaw/Bowling Green (Lee-Davis) (22:56, 23rd), Paula Roberson/Fairfax (Chantilly) (23:22, 24th), and Brittany Long/Mechanicsville (Lee-Davis) (24:51, 27th).
