FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University finished third among four teams at the inaugural Longwood University Cross Country Invitational at the Longwood Golf Club Saturday in Farmville. The Lancers (1-2) defeated Hampden-Sydney 15-50, and fell to Liberty 26-29 and to Campbell 18-39 in the dual-meet-scored race as Campbell (3-0) won the event, followed by Liberty (2-1), the Lancers (1-2), and Hampden-Sydney (0-3) as the Flames’ Jarvis Jelen won the 8K race in 25:30. Longwood will compete again on September 29 at the Lehigh Invitational in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
Longwood was led by senior D.J. Palmer/Chantilly (Chantilly) with his time of 27:05 to finish fifth among 33 collegiate runners. Palmer was followed by juniors Evan Kearney/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) (27:34, 8th) and Matt Gordon/Annandale (Bishop Ireton) (27:36, 11th), sophomore Ross Roberts/Powhatan (Powhatan) (27:53, 12th), and senior Mark Anderson/Chesapeake (Western Branch) (28:40, 18th). Roberts ran a new collegiate career-best for 8K.
Also running for the Lancers were sophomore Daniel Honey/Fairfax (W.T. Woodson) (28:41, 19th), freshmen Dave Jeffers/Virginia Beach (Ocean Lakes) (28:59, 20th), Daniel Cummings/Hampton (Ocean Lakes) (29:05, 21st), Tyler Copley/Chesapeake (Western Branch) (29:08, 22nd), John Lapke/Virginia Beach (Cox) (29:21, 23rd), Phil Kada/Arlington (Franklin) (29:28, 24th), and Dave Reed/Rocky Mount (Franklin) (29:29, 25th).
