BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Longwood University finished third among four teams at the Campbell University Men’s Cross Country Invitational this past Saturday in the Buies Creek, North Carolina. The Lancers (1-2) defeated UNC Wilmington 20-43, while falling to UNC Greensboro 26-29 and to host Campbell 18-38 in the dual-meet-scored race as the Camels (3-0) won their own event, led by Verrelle Wyatt who won the 5K race in 15:18. Longwood will compete again on Saturday, September 15, hosting their own Longwood Invitational at the Longwood Golf Club in Farmville beginning at 11:45 a.m..
Longwood was led by junior Matt Gordon/Annandale (Bishop Ireton) with his time of 16:24 to finish eighth among 38 runners. Gordon was followed by classmate Evan Kearney/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) (16:29, 10th), seniors D.J. Palmer/Chantilly (Chantilly) (16:34, 11th) and Mark Anderson/Chesapeake (Western Branch) (16:42, 13th), along with sophomore Ross Roberts/Powhatan (Powhatan) (16:48, 15th).
Also running for the Lancers were sophomore Daniel Honey/Fairfax (W.T. Woodson) (16:53, 19th), and freshmen Tyler Copley/Chesapeake (Western Branch) (17:04, 22nd), Dave Reed/Rocky Mount (Franklin) (17:25, 30th), Dave Jeffers/Virginia Beach (Ocean Lakes) (17:35, 32nd), John Lapke/Virginia Beach (Cox) (17:40, 34th), as well as Phil Kada/Arlington (Franklin) (17:50, 36th).
The Longwood Invitational on Sept. 15 at the golf course located on Johnston Drive will be the first-ever home cross country competition hosted by the Lancers.
