SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Longwood University dropped a season-opening 1-0 women’s soccer decision at Wofford College Friday afternoon in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The Lancers are now 0-1, while the Terriers improved to 1-0. Longwood will return to Farmville for its first home match of the season on Sunday night, September 2, hosting Radford University at the Athletics Complex beginning at 7 p.m..
At Wofford, Longwood allowed the only goal of the match at 42:03 when the hosts were awarded a free kick that Monica Ploetzke deposited into the lower left corner of the net from approximately 18-yards out. The Lancers had a couple of breakaway opportunities in the second half but could not convert as the one-goal differential stood.
“It’s always tough on the road, and we learned a valuable lesson and paid the price for not taking advantage of our opportunities,” said 14th-year head coach Todd Dyer ‘93. “We’ll try to get better from this contest and see what we can do at home against Radford on Sunday.”
Wofford took a 20-6 advantage in shots, and had a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Longwood sophomore midfielder Kaylyn Mahon/Spring Grove, Pa. (Spring Grove) had two shot attempts to lead the offensive attack. Senior goalkeeper Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) (90:00) went the distance in front of the net for the Lancers with nine saves, while the team was credited with two stops as well. Katie McChesney (90:00) also played the duration for the Terriers with four saves.
