FARMVILLE, Va.-- Longwood University men’s soccer poured on the pressure in the final fifteen minutes but were unable to put the ball in the back of the net falling 1-0 to Wofford Friday night in its season opener. The Lancers (0-1) out shot the Terriers 11-9, including a 7-3 margin in the final 45:00. Longwood will return to action on Sunday, September 2, when they host Rider for a 1 p.m. match-up.
The Terriers struck early in the first half on an unassisted goal by Moe Kelli in the 11th minute. Kelli took a through pass just inside the six-yard box and made a quick move to the inside and fired a shot that bounced off the post and in the net for the 1-0 lead. The lead would stay that way heading into the halftime break.
With its back against the wall, Longwood began to press the Wofford defense and goaltender Joey Taylor looking for the equalizer.
Martin Vickerton/Derbyshire, England (Kirk Hallam Technical College) picked up a loose ball along the left side line and sent a low cross in the box that went through everyone and was then cleared out by a Terrier defender. With under ten minutes to go in the game
Chernor Diallo/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) put a threw ball just inside the 18-yard box where
Marcus Dixon/Gloucester (Gloucester) tried to knock it past Wofford’s charging keeper. Dixon hit it past Taylor but a Wofford defender kicked it out of bounds to end the threat. That was as close as the Lancers got as the Terriers defense held to keep the game at 1-0.
Brandt Youmans/Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus) anchored the Lancers between the posts making four saves in 90:00 of action while Taylor finished with four saves.
