Tim Fudd Joins Men's Basketball Coaching Staff

Tim Fudd

August 23, 2007

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University fifth-year men’s basketball head coach Mike Gillian has announced the appointment of Tim Fudd as a new Assistant Coach with the program. Fudd was the head coach at Notre Dame Academy in Middleburg during 2006-07, leading the program to a 33-1 record and the Virginia Independent Schools (VIS) Division II State Championship while earning VIS Division II and Loudoun County Coach of the Year honors.

“I am pleased to announce the hiring of Tim Fudd to join our coaching staff,” said Gillian. “I’ve known Tim for quite some time and he is a person and coach that fits extremely well into what we are doing, and how we are doing it, in the Longwood Basketball Program. Tim has done a great job building his coaching resume and proven to be especially effective in the area of player development. This is clearly a continuation of all the hard work he did as a player to get the most out of his own abilities, and we are going to look to him to now put his experiences to work in helping our players, and program, improve.”

Fudd led Notre Dame Academy to its best record ever last season, including a school-record 30 wins before its first loss. The program won seven tournaments and was ranked #2 in Virginia among both public and private schools, according to MaxPreps/USA Today, while improving upon the previous year’s record of 13-18. In addition to his state and county coaching accolades, Fudd was also named the DCMetroHoops.Net Metropolitan Co-Coach of the Year.

Fudd also has previous high school assistant coaching experience at The Bullis School in Potomac, Maryland (2004-06), The Potomac School in McLean (2000-04), and at Fairfax High School (2003-05). He has played professionally in Europe as well, including time in Holland (1997-98), Finland (1997-98), Spain (1998-99), and Venezuela (1999). Fudd was also co-founder of the NOVA Select AAU Club (2000-02), and has coached the Middleburg Lions AAU (2003-05), the Starz Performance Basketball AAU (2004-05), and with the Boo Williams Summer League travel team (2007).

A native of Falls Church, Fudd earned his bachelor of science degree in business administration from The American University in 1996. He was a member of the men’s basketball team from 1991-96, including a redshirt season, earning All-Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) honors during 1993-94, when he led the CAA in scoring (20.0), and 1995-96; finishing his career ranked 12th on the AU all-time scoring list (1,303) and 15th on the school’s all-time rebounding list (639). Fudd was a two-year team captain as well for then Eagles’ head coach and current Maryland radio analyst Chris Knoche (1994-96). He earned All-State and All-Region honors as a senior at Chantilly High School, leading CHS to the 1991 Northern Region Championship.

Fudd is married to the former Katie Smrcka-Duffy, a 2001 graduate of Georgetown University where she was a three-year standout on the women’s basketball team after playing one season at North Carolina State University (1997 ACC Rookie of the Year). Smrcka-Duffy is a former high school All-American at Madison High School in northern Virginia and scored 2,463 career points, second all-time in Virginia High School League history. She was drafted by the WNBA’s Sacramento Monarchs in 2001, but never played due to injury. The couple have a daughter (Azzi, 4).
