WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 6-4 baseball decision at the College of William and Mary Sunday in Williamsburg, concluding the 2007 campaign. The Lancers led 4-3 into the bottom of the eighth inning before the Tribe (27-24) scored three runs in the eighth to take the home victory. Longwood finishes its season with a final record of 34-19 for its highest win total since beginning Division I scheduling in 2005 while also equaling the third-most wins (34) in the program’s 29-year history.
William and Mary took a 3-0 lead in the first inning behind three hits, including a two-run home run by Mike Sheridan (2-3, 3 RBI). Sheridan added the game-winning RBI double in the eighth inning as well for the Tribe. Robbie Nickle (1-4, 2 RBI) had a two-run single in the eighth to provide for the final margin.
Longwood scored two runs in the seventh inning on a two-run single by freshman Topher Ellis/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) (1-4, 2 RBI) that scored classmates Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (2-4) and Frank Berry II/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) (1-2) who had singled and doubled, respectively. The Lancers took the lead in the top of the eighth when sophomore Jon Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (1-3, 2 RBI) hit a two-run home run to left field that plated classmate Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (2-4) who had kept the inning alive with a two-out infield single to shortstop. Bailey finished 2007 with a .392 batting average.
Longwood junior right-hander John Farrell/Nantucket, Mass. (Nantucket) pitched the first 5.0 innings, scattering five hits and three runs, all earned, with two strikeouts and two walks. Senior left-hander Needham Jones III/Portsmouth (Woodrow Wilson) (5-4) took the mound loss with the final 3.0 innings of relief, allowing two hits and three runs, all earned, with two walks.
It was the second close loss to William and Mary this season as the Tribe defeated Longwood 3-1 back on February 27 at Lancer Stadium in Farmville. The Lancers now trail in the all-time series against W&M 10-6.
Longwood finished this year with a home record of 25-10 while attaining its 12th 30-win season, 20th 25-win season, and 25th-straight 20-win season as well. The Lancers could return as many as 20 letterwinners for the 2008 campaign.
