FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University swept a baseball doubleheader past visiting New Jersey Institute of Technology Saturday at Lancer Stadium in Farmville; winning the first game 8-1 and the second game 6-4. The Lancers took advantage of three home runs in the opener, including two from senior Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (2-4, 2 RBI) before taking a 6-0 lead into the final inning of the nightcap en route to a four-game sweep of the Highlanders over two days. Longwood improved to 28-11 overall, including a 25-7 record at home, and will play again on Tuesday, April 10, at James Madison University in Harrisonburg beginning at 3:00 p.m..

In the first game, Childress hit a pair of solo home runs for Longwood -- the first in the opening inning with two outs to left field and the second in the third inning with one out to left field as well. The Lancers scored two runs in each of the first three innings to lead 6-0. Also in the first inning, sophomore Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (1-3, RBI) led-off with a double and later scored the game’s first run on a sacrifice fly from classmate Jon Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (0-3, RBI). In the second, senior captain Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (2-3, RBI) had an RBI single while Bailey added another sacrifice fly. In the third, sophomore Paul Heidler II/Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) (1-2, RBI) followed Childress with his own solo home run to center field.

Longwood added runs in both the seventh and eighth innings, the run in the seventh scored unearned [after a fielding error] by freshman Phi Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (2-4) who had led-off with a bunt single. In the eighth, freshman Topher Ellis/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) (2-4, RBI) added an RBI single for the Lancers. NJIT scored its lone run in the fourth inning on a solo home run by Kwesi Mitchell (1-4, RBI).

Sophomore left-handed pitcher Kevin Light/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (4-2) took the pitching win with the first 7.0 innings, scattering five hits and one earned run with six strikeouts and one walk. Bobby Wyrwa (0-1) suffered the mound loss with the first 4.0 innings for NJIT, allowing seven hits and six earned runs with one walk.

In the second game, Bailey (3-4, RBI) set the tone with a first-pitch home run to left-center field in the bottom of the first inning for Longwood. The solo blast extended his hitting streak to 14 games to match his earlier 14-game streak this season. Also in the first, freshman Scott Kimble/Spotsylvania (Spotsylvania) (3-3, 3 RBI) added an RBI single. The Lancers added a run in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Cerreto (1-3, RBI) that scored Ames (1-2) who had been hit-by-a-pitch earlier in the frame. In the fifth inning, the hosts plated three more runs as Kimble added a two-run double down the left field line, and Ellis (1-3, RBI) contributed an RBI single.

NJIT avoided the shutout in its final at-bat, scoring four runs on one hit while aided by a fielding error and three walks, including one with the bases loaded to Derrick McCain (0-2, RBI). Mitchell (1-3, 2 RBI) added a two-run single for the Highlanders as well.

Senior left-handed pitcher Needham Jones III/Portsmouth (Woodrow Wilson) (4-2) earned the pitching win with 2.1 innings of scoreless middle relief, allowing just one hit with two strikeouts. Classmate and right-handed pitcher Alan Moore/Richmond (Monacan) had tossed the first 3.2 shutout innings, allowing just one hit as well with three strikeouts and five walks. Rob Pietrocola (0-2) took the mound loss for NJIT with the first 4.1 innings, yielding nine hits and six runs, five earned, with one walk.
