FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University lacrosse fell in its season finale 18-11 to the visiting Davidson Wildcats Wednesday afternoon at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. Leading the way for the Lancers (3-13) was senior Cathleen Strain/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) who wrapped up her playing career at Longwood with four goals in the match-up.
The Wildcats jumped out to a four goal lead just six minutes in on goals by Emily Diefendorf, Kelly Finnigan, Emily Palmer and Sarah Walter. After Strain and Dee Warehime/Westminster, Md. (Westminster) scored back-to-back goals, the Lancers were able to cut the Davidson deficit in half to put the score at 4-2 with 23:02 remaining in the half. In a balanced attack by the visiting Wildcats, Davidson was able to put up five more goals to take a 9-2 lead with under ten minutes remaining in the opening half. Strain tallied her second goal and Kathleen Barry/Annandale, Va. (W.T. Woodson) put a pair of goals of her own in the back of the net to bring Longwood within four with 1:40 to go before the break. Jen Crawford gave Davidson a five goal halftime lead, sneaking a shot past Eliza Coughter/Charlottesville (Charlottesville) as time expired in the first half.
Davidson continued to roll in the second half as Longwood only came as close as five after Christine Comeau/Whitby, Ontario (Sinclair Secondary) took a pass from Barry and fired it past the Wildcats’ keeper with n19:37 to go in the game. The Lancers could not get any closer as the visiting Davidson Wildcats outscored Longwood 5-3 in the final 15:00.
Jennifer Holliday/Gaithersberg, Md. (Quince Orchard) got the start in goal and split time with Coughter as the two combined for 12 saves while Davidson was anchored by Laura Johnson who made 17 on the day.
