Women's Lacrosse Falls 22-6 At #3 Duke

Liz Sellmayer Tallied A Team High Three Goals

DURHAM, N.C.—Longwood University lacrosse struggled against the #3 Duke Blue Devils falling 22-6 Sunday afternoon. The Lancers fall to 3-12 on the year while Duke moves to 13-2 overall. Longwood will return to action on Wednesday, April 25, when they host Davidson at 4 p.m. in its final game of the year.

The Blue Devils and Lancers exchanged a pair of goals early on in the first half to put the game at 2-2 with 25:28 to go in the half. Liz Sellmayer/Baltimore, Md. (Mount de Sales Academy) got the Lancers on the board after she fired a pass from Kathleen Barry/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) past the Duke goalie to knot the game at one. After another Blue Devil goal, Longwood answered right back on a Cathleen Strain/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) free position goal to put the score at 2-2. Duke however, was able to go on an eight goal lead in the next nine minutes to give the home squad a 10-2 lead. Sellmayer tallied her second goal of the half on a free position shot to end the scoring drought and bring the Lancers back to within seven. Duke closed the half out strong scoring the final six goals to build a 16-3 halftime lead.

Strain opened up scoring in the second half scoring an unassisted goal just 1:02 in the half. After Duke racked up three more goals, Sellmayer tallied her third goal taking a pass from Dee Warehime/Westminster, Md. (Westminster) and putting it in the back of the net to put the score at 19-5. Page Farmer/Richmond (St. Catherine’s) tallied the Lancers final goal to end the game at 22-6.

Jennifer Holliday/Gaithersburg, Md. (Quince Orchard) and Eliza Coughter/Charlottesville (Charlottesville) each saw time between the posts for Longwood. Holliday logged 37:42 of time allowing 17 goals while making three saves. Coughter saw 22:18 of action and allowed five goals and made two saves in the loss.
