Women's Lacrosse Drops 20-9 Decision At American

Cathleen Strain Tallied Five Points On Four Goals And One Assist In the Game

WASHINGTON, D.C.-- Longwood University women’s lacrosse was outscored 12-4 in the final thirty minutes to fall to American 20-9 Wednesday afternoon in Washington, D.C..  The Lancers (3-11) were led by Cathleen Strain’s/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) five points while American’s (8-6) Lauren Aksionoff recorded five points of her own on four goals and one assist.  Longwood will return to action on Sunday, April 22, when they travel to Durham, N.C. for an 1 p.m. match up with the #4 Blue Devils.

Strain got the Lancers on the board on a free position shot at the 22:47 mark for the early 1-0 lead.  The Eagles then answered back and went on five goal run in the next nine minutes to build a 5-1 lead with 10:40 remaining in the half.  Led by Shannon Strain’s/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) two goals, Longwood put a three goal run of its own together to cut the deficit to one goal with 9:52 to go before the break.  Page Farmer/Richmond (St. Catherine’s) also recorded a goal in the three goal run by the Lancers.  American however closed the half strong scoring three of the final four goals of the half to build an 8-5 lead. 

After two quick goals by the home squad to build a five goal lead, Cathleen Strain tallied her second goal of the game at the 27:15 mark to put the score at 10-6.  The next seven minutes proved to be the difference maker, as the Eagles racked up seven goals that the Lancers were unable to recover.  After Cathleen Strain scored her third goal of the game, American was able to put two more goals in the back of the net, followed by a Longwood goal from the stick of Dee Warehime/Westminster, Md. (Westminster) scored on a free position shot to put the deficit at 18-9 in favor of American with 2:56 to go in the game.  The Eagles tacked on two more goals in the last three minutes to grab a 20-9 win.

In net for the Lancers Jennifer Holliday/Gaithersburg, Md. (Quince Orchard) saw the majority of time in goal recording six saves in 53:03 while Eliza Coughter/Charlottesville (Charlottesville) played the final 6:57 of the game.  In net for American was Kristine Vida played the entire 60:00 game for the Eagles, recording 11 saves in the win.
