GAME ONE BOX SCORE
GAME TWO BOX SCORE
FARMVILLE, Va.-- Longwood University softball held the Georgetown Hoyas to no runs in both games in Saturday's doubleheader sweep beating the Hoyas 5-0 and 8-0 at Lancer Field. The Lancers improve to 18-14 overall while Georgetown falls to 8-33 on the year. Longwood will return to action on Wednesday, April 18, when they travel to Virginia for a 3 p.m. doubleheader with the Cavaliers.
In game one, Longwood needed three innings to get on the board getting four runs on four hits in the bottom of the third inning. After Ashley Forsyth/Freehold, N.J. (Freehold) reached first base on an error on the third baseman, Forsyth made her way to second on a bunt single by Kristina Garrison/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) that just was out of reach of a Hoya fielder to put two on with no outs. After Caitlin Hooe/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) flied out to center field, Camille Ketsdever/Irvine, Calif. (Irvine) came to the plate and sent a three-run homerun over the fence in left center field to give Longwood the three run edge. Ryan Washington/Bealeton (Liberty) followed up with a double down the left field line and came in two batters later on a double from Kaitlyn McKeown/Gordonsville (Orange County) for the 4-0 lead after three innings.
Longwood tacked on two runs in the fifth inning, as the Lancer bats started to get to the Hoyas pitcher. Ketsdever reached second on an error by the center fielder and came in on a single from Washington one batter later. Longwood’s next batter Amy Betterton/Rocky Mount (Franklin County) recorded an RBI of her own to bring in Washington at second for the 6-0 lead and stood at second with no outs after advancing on the throw. Betterton however was stranded and second as the Lancers’ next three batters to retire in order.
Georgetown threatened in the top of the sixth inning after its first two batters were able to get on with a single and double to put runners at first and second with no outs. Rachel Mills/Quinton (New Kent County) would not be denied the shutout win, getting the next two Hoya batters to ground out and after a walk to load the bases Mills got the next batter to ground out to Washington for the final out and keeping the shutout.
Mills continued to pitched strong in the final inning, striking out two of the final four batters she faced for a game total of seven, while surrendering six hits and two walks in seven innings of play. Georgetown’s Jennifer Connell also went the whole way through surrendering six runs on seven hits while striking out five.
In game two, the Lancer jumped on top early getting two runs on three hits in the first inning. Hooe got things going, hitting a lead-off triple down the right field line and came in on a single to right field by Ketsdever for the 1-0 lead. After the next two Longwood batters recorded outs, McKeown doubled down the left field line to bring in Ketsdever at second to pad the lead to two. The Lancers were unable to bring any runs in after loading the bases with two outs to keep the game at 2-0 after one.
Forsyth found her stride in the circle in the second inning, sitting down all three batters to keep the Georgetown off the board through two innings. The Lancers’ bats continued to swing in the second to bring two runs in on four hits. Hooe and Ketsdever hit back-to-back singles and each moved up and base on the throw in from the outfield, putting runners in scoring position with two outs. Hooe came in on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Washington and Ketsdever was batted in on a single by Betterton to double Longwood’s lead to four.
Washington tagged a ball to left center field for her team leading fifth homerun on the year, in the bottom of the fourth inning to put the score at 5-0. Longwood was able to get three runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game 8-0. After back-to-back singles from McKeown and Emily Radford/Tacoma, Wash. (Fife), Pepper Wilson/Mechanicsville (Lee-Davis) doubled into right field to bring the two base runners in for the 7-0 score and no outs. Wilson advanced to third on a ground out by Forsyth and came home on Longwood’s next hit by Garrison to give the Lancers the win. Forsyth was a force in the circle for Longwood allowing one hit in five innings, while striking out seven along the way.
