Women's Lacrosse Records 19-8 Win Over Howard

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University women’s lacrosse took advantage of a road weary Howard team dominating from the start in the 19-8 win Friday afternoon in Farmville.  The Lancers improves to 3-9 on the year while Howard falls to 2-7 overall.  Longwood will travel to North Carolina to take on the #3 ranked Tar Heels on Sunday, April 15, game time set for 1 p.m...
    
The Lancers jumped out to a five goal lead seven minutes into the contest, having each goal came of the stick of a different player in the opening minutes.  Missy Rumbley/Baltimore, Md. (Parkville) got things going 1:20 into the match-up putting a shot over Howard’s goalie for the 1-0 lead.  Michelle Owen/Finksburg, Md. (Mount de Sales Academy) and Cathleen Strain/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) teamed-up for the next Longwood goal scored ten seconds later to pad the lead to two.  Shannon Strain/Alexandria (Mount Vernon), Liz Sellmayer/Baltimore, Md. (Mount de Sales Academy) and Cathleen Strain tallied the next three goals to build the 5-0 lead with 22:32 remaining in the half.  After back-to-back goals by Howard’s Iram Abdullah, Longwood racked up the following ten goals to jumped out to the 15-2 halftime lead.  Led by Cathleen Strain’s three goals in the run, the Lancers took control of the game from that point on, as the visiting Bison only got as close as ten goals in the final thirty minutes.
    
Allie Armstrong/Chestertown, Md. (Queen Anne’s), Dee Warehime/Westminster, Md. (Westminster), Shawn Darrell/Chestertown, Md. (Chestertown) and Carlie Nethken/Elkridge, Md. (Long Reach) each recorded goals in the second half to preserve the win for the Lancers.  Splitting time in net for Longwood was Jennifer Holliday/Gaithersburg, Md. (Quince Orchard) and Eliza Coughter/Charlottesville (Charlottesville) who combined for five saves in the contest.
