RICHMOND, Va.-- Longwood University women’s tennis fell 5-2 to Richmond Thursday afternoon falling to 10-8 on the year. The Lancers had a tough go at it this afternoon taking one doubles match and only two singles match in the contest. Longwood will return to action on Saturday, April 14, when they host George Mason for a 1 p.m. match. The contest with the Patriots will be the last home match of the season for the Lancers.
Romana Bucur/Brasov, Romania (Joan Mesota) dropped her first match in 13 contests, falling to Richmond’s national ranked Beatrice Grasu 4-6, 3-6. Grasu is currently ranked 63 in the nation. Elena Triebskorn/Heddesheim, Germany (Carl-Benz-Gymnasium) defeated the Spiders’ Robin Carter 6-3, 7-5 before Richmond took the next three matches over Longwood’s Laura Simon/Manresa, Spain (IES Lluis de Peguera), Ashley Melson/Virginia Beach (Kellam) and Lexi Torrice/Richmond (Douglas Freeman). Melson battled Richmond’s Ashlee Vosters to three sets after falling in the first 3-6, to take the second 6-2 but eventually losing in the decisive third set 8-10. Brittany Huddleston/Roanoke (Cave Spring) won Longwood’s only other match, beating Jelena Zivanovic 6-1, 6-0 in the number six spot.
The Lancers took only one match in doubles as the team of Triebskorn/Bucur beat Grasu/Carter 8-7 in the number one spot while Huddleston/Melson and Torrice/Simon fell in their respective matches.
