GAME ONE BOX SCORE

GAME TWO BOX SCORE

BUIES CREEK, N.C.-- Longwood University softball recorded a doubleheader split at Campbell Thursday afternoon, winning game one 3-1, but falling in the night cap 2-1.  The Lancers (16-14) were led by Ryan Washington/Bealeton (Liberty) who finished the two game series going 5-6 (.833) with three RBI on two doubles and one homerun.  Longwood will return to action on Saturday, April 14, when they host Georgetown in a 2 p.m. contest at Lancer Field.

In game one Longwood took no time to jump on the scoreboard, as lead-off batter Caitlin Hooe/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) started off with a single up the middle and made her way to third on back-to-back steals putting a runner in scoring position with two outs.  After Camille Ketsdever/Irvine, Calif. (Irvine) earned a walk to put runners at the corners, Washington doubled to centerfield to score Hooe easily, while Ketsdever moved to third keeping runners in scoring position. Campbell’s pitcher however got the Camels out of the inning, striking out three of Longwood’s next four batters she faced to keep the game at a one run deficit.  Campbell however, got things going in the bottom half of the inning and was able to bring one run in to knot the score at one after one inning of play.

The game would remain that way until the top of the fifth inning, as the Lancers took the lead for good on another RBI off the bat of Washington to score Ketsdever from second base to give Longwood the 2-1 lead.  Washington’s day was not done as the junior shortstop hit the long ball over the centerfield fence to give Longwood a two run cushion in the top of the seventh inning.  Washington was perfect from the plate, going 4-4 with three RBI and one run scored in the win.

The two run lead would be all Ashley Forstyh/Freehold, N.J. (Freehold) would need as the freshman hurler retired the Camels in order in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Lancers the win.  Forsyth pitched seven complete innings, sacrificing one run on nine hits while striking out three for eighth win of the year.

In game two, Campbell took advantage of a defensive miscue on Longwood to take a 1-0 after one inning of play.  The Lancers remained patient and knotted the game at one in the top of the fourth, as Washington lead off with a double through the left side and came in on an error by the Camels’ catcher for the 1-1 tie.

Campbell however went ahead for good in the bottom of the sixth inning and Longwood was unable to recover in the top of the seventh, falling 2-1 in the night cap.  Rachel Mills/Quinton (New Kent County) recorded the loss, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out one.
