BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Longwood University women’s lacrosse was suffered a 18-9 setback at Virginia Tech Tuesday afternoon, falling to 2-9 on the year while the Hokies improve to 5-9. Cathleen Strain/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) led the Lancers with four goals in the loss. Longwood will return to action on Friday, April 13, as they host Howard in a 4 p.m. match-up.
Strain got the Lancers on the board just 1:22 into the match scoring an unassisted goal at the 28:38 mark. After a pair of Virginia Tech goals by Jenna Reich and Lindsay Pieper, Kathleen Barry/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) knotted the game 34 seconds later on a free position shot at the 24:26 mark. That was it for Longwood offensively as the Hokies attack picked up and ranked up 11 unanswered goals to close the half with a 13-2 lead.
Jennifer Holliday/Gaithersburg, Md. (Quince Orchard) was under pressure for most of the 32:40 she was in goal and made six saves before Eliza Coughter/Charlottesville (Charlottesville) came in for the final 27:20 of the game. After Virginia Tech opened the lead up to 14-2 Liz Sellmayer/Baltimore, Md. (Mount de Sales Academy) fired an unassisted goal of her own in to put the score at 14-3 with 24:48 remaining. The Hokies answered back with a four goal run to jump out to a 15 goal advantage before the Lancers closed the game strong scoring the final six goals. Leading the way was Strain who tallied three while sister Shannon Strain/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) had two and Lauren Barnaba/Bel Air, Md. (The John Carroll School) recorded one.
Coughter finished the contest with six saves while Virginia Tech was anchored by Kari Morrison and Megan Waters who combined for seven saves in the win.
